How to Lay Floor Boards
Use your joist to lay your floor boards. As far as DIY projects go, this is not a difficult project and should not take loads of time to do. The first thing you need to do is figure out where your joists are below the floor. It is important that you know the width of the room and compare it to the number of floor boards you will need to complete this DIY project.
The most important thing is to make sure your floor boards run at right angles to the joists no matter what the shape of the room. To get your right angle, there are a number of things you can use. You can use a piece of wood, ruler, or anything else that has a straight edge. Whatever you decide to use, just remember to measure and mark.
You also want to start laying your floor board from the corner out. Measure carefully and mark the position of the floor board on the joist. Be sure you cut both ends of the floor boards so you do not have one cut end and one whole end on the same board. Additional cuts will have to be made for the chimney, drain holes (if you have any), conduit pipes, water pipes, etc. You will need to cut additional trimming joists to close the gaps around the holes you cut out. One very important skill you need for this project is to know how to read a tape accurately.
