DIY Tools Blog: Hammers and Nails

Hammers and nails are the most common materials for woodworking, construction and engineering. Basically, these two kinds of tools won’t work without the presence of each other. Although modern and automated equipment that offers the same application as a hammer and nails is already available, is the hammer and nails are still the most basic and easiest tools to use in doing carpentry work.

Hammers are tools that are designed to pound and give impact to a certain object. The designs of hammers depend on the particular job. Different hammers differ in size, shape and structure, although common hammers are characterised by a handle and head, where the heaviest part is centred. On the other hand, nails are sharp and pin-shaped objects that are usually made up of steel or hard metal. Nails are used to fasten or hold materials together.

There are 14 types of nails and 22 kinds of hammers on the market today. It is very important to choose appropriately because every type of nail and hammer may not be applicable to a certain task. The first thing to remember is that the size of the nail must correspond to the size of the hammer. The claw hammer is the best to use in working with smaller nails. It is also advisable to wear protective eyewear, no matter the size of the nail and hammer.

he materials to be nailed should also be considered. Use a nylon hammer if the materials are sensitive, to avoid defacement. Additionally, use a magnetic tack hammer for upholstery work and driving a nail into a narrow surface. If you attend any events, look out for a diy themed pull up banner stand to help guide you.
